A Transformed Social Play Space at Thorley Hill Primary School

Location: South London

The Client Brief
Thorley Hill Primary School approached us with a clear vision: to create a calm, inclusive outdoor space where children could relax, connect, and express themselves. Rather than prioritising climbing equipment, the school wanted a quieter, more thoughtful environment, a place where children could sit, chat and reflect.

“In an ideal world, remove the edging, resurface with AG, and replace equipment. A quiet area where children can sit, chat and just ‘be’. A stage would be lovely. The train is well used by children to sit and talk and the hut is a favourite. Climbing equipment isn’t essential.”

Budget and Funding
The project was made possible through a collaborative funding effort. £7,000 was generously raised by the Friends of the Association, with the school contributing an additional £10,000, bringing the total project budget to £17,000.

Design Priorities
The school’s priorities were clear. The perimeter edging, which had become worn and unsafe, needed to be fully removed and replaced. The space also needed new AG surfacing along with dedicated quiet zones where children could gather. Seating was key, especially around the much-loved train and hut, both of which were to be retained. A small performance stage was also on the wish list to support creative expression and role-play.

What We Delivered — £17,000 All-Inclusive
With smart planning and clear priorities, we were able to completely transform the space within budget. All perimeter edging was removed and replaced, giving the space both safety and a clean, defined finish. The installation of AG surfacing created a soft, all-weather base ideal for calm, low-key play.

A new performance stage now invites storytelling, role-play, and confidence-building activities, while the train and hut remain important social anchors — beloved by pupils and now refreshed as part of the design. We also introduced new seating areas and structured quiet zones that encourage conversation, reflection, and connection. The overall layout was designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, ensuring that every child feels welcome in the space.

The Outcome
The finished project reflects the school’s values beautifully. It’s a space designed not for spectacle, but for comfort, creativity, and community. The children now have an outdoor area that supports their emotional wellbeing, encourages friendships and gives them freedom to express themselves without the need for large play structures.

“It’s exactly what we hoped for. It’s calm, welcoming, and well used. The children love the stage and the seating areas. It feels like a space they can truly make their own.”

This transformation is a testament to what’s possible with a shared vision and community funding. A modest budget, when focused on the right priorities, can deliver a space that supports connection, imagination and joy every day.
