Templewood Primary School EYFS Playground Extension

Overview

The school wanted to create additional opportunities for physical development, with a particular focus on climbing, balance and upper-body strength, while also introducing a new road track and upgrading the surfacing throughout the area.

With a budget of £25,000, the aim was to maximise the available space and create an exciting extension that complemented the existing EYFS provision.

The Brief

The school wanted the new development to:

• Extend the existing EYFS play area
• Introduce greater climbing challenges
• Develop upper-body strength and coordination
• Support fine and gross motor skill development
• Incorporate balance and movement activities
• Create a road track to encourage imaginative and physical play
• Upgrade the existing surfacing with a safe and durable finish

Our Solution

Climbing & Physical Challenge

At the centre of the new development is a play tower complete with slide, climbing wall and tunnel, providing children with a variety of ways to access and explore the equipment.

The climbing elements were specifically selected to offer a greater level of challenge while remaining suitable for the EYFS age group, encouraging children to develop confidence, coordination and physical ability through active play.

A set of monkey bars was also introduced to provide a dedicated upper-body challenge. The equipment helps children develop strength while supporting the development of fine and gross motor skills, grip, coordination and spatial awareness.

Balance & Movement

Balance beams were incorporated into the scheme to provide additional opportunities for children to develop balance, coordination and body control.

Together with the climbing equipment and monkey bars, the area offers a varied selection of physical challenges that encourage children to develop skills progressively through play.

Road Track & Surfacing

To add another dimension to the play space, we created a block paving road track, providing an imaginative route for wheeled toys and encouraging active role play.

The track incorporates a wetpour ramp, adding a change in level and further physical challenge.

The remainder of the area was finished with artificial grass installed over a shock pad, providing a natural-looking and durable play surface while helping to create a comfortable environment for everyday EYFS use.

Installation & Handover

The project was completed within one week, allowing the school to quickly benefit from the new outdoor provision.

Following completion, the area was handed back to the school with a fully compliant inspection report, confirming that the new play area had been inspected and was ready for use.

The Result

The completed extension has provided Templewood Primary School with a dynamic addition to its existing EYFS provision, offering children more opportunities to climb, balance, strengthen, explore and use their imagination.

By building on the existing area we delivered in 2022, the new development creates a natural continuation of the school’s outdoor play environment while introducing greater physical challenge and variety.
