Stephen Hawking School, London

Stephen Hawking school, London originally contacted ESP Play back in February 2019 with an ambitious intention to transform their outdoor play areas. The playgrounds contained endless accessibility and design flaws which made using the playground a risk assessment nightmare for staff. The school had a very clear vision with independent learning and sensory experience at the core.
Location: Tower Hamlets, London
Stephen Hawking is a SEN school catering to those with severe, profound, and multiple disabilities. The existing playground was uneven, lacked free space and different surfacing levels made the area inaccessible to many of the children who are assisted with chairs, walkers or have visual impairments. ESP have transformed the area through new level surfaces and created a streamlined, simplistic area. New user-friendly equipment had huge focus on sensory stimulation, everything was purpose designed and manufactured to the unique needs of the school. These include nest swing, wheelchair accessible messy play stations, musical instruments, sensory play hut and a large, covered canopy with floral roof.
Feedback
“We are absolutely delighted with the transformation. ESP Play completely understood our needs and really showed how much they cared. The children now have an accessible outdoor space, and we can’t thank them enough for what they have done”
