St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Barking and Dagenham - Transforming Outdoor Learning for EYFS & Forest Area
Location: Barking and Dagenham
The Brief
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School aimed to completely revitalise their outdoor space dedicated to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and an adjacent forest area. The existing surface was uneven and damaged by tree roots, covered with old astro-turf, making it unsafe and limiting opportunities for outdoor play and learning. The goal was to create a versatile, engaging environment that would support the full range of EYFS learning areas while also providing a natural, forest-inspired setting.
Budget
The total budget allocated for this transformation was £186,000.
Design Priorities
The site presented several challenges. The ground was uneven and heavily affected by exposed tree roots, requiring significant levelling work. The worn astro-turf was no longer safe for play and the design needed to accommodate year-round outdoor use despite unpredictable weather conditions. These factors demanded a carefully planned and executed solution to ensure both safety, quality and longevity.
The project focused on transforming the surface using high-quality resin bound gravel alongside artificial grass and block paving, creating a safe and durable base with a natural aesthetic. The design ensured that all seven areas of the EYFS curriculum were represented through distinct zones, providing children with diverse learning and play experiences. Natural elements were integrated throughout, including repurposed tree stumps that function as tables, reinforcing the woodland theme and encouraging hands-on interaction with the environment.
What We Delivered
The transformation began with comprehensive groundworks to level the area and prepare it for resurfacing. A canopy-covered outdoor classroom was installed, equipped with roll-down covers that allow flexibility for different weather conditions. To enhance imaginative and physical play, custom-built dens, climbing equipment, and a performance space were created. Additional features included a resin-bound roadway, sand, mud, and water play areas, planters, and various habitats designed to foster curiosity and creativity. The entire space was carefully planned to support the full range of EYFS learning objectives, from literacy and numeracy to expressive arts and understanding the world.
Forest Area Highlights
The adjoining forest area was developed as a sensory-rich environment that encourages exploration, risk-taking, and independence. Purpose-built dens, climbing structures, and habitat zones were included to provide a dynamic space that connects children to nature. The design was flexible and forward-looking, allowing for future expansion and further development of the outdoor learning environment.
Timeline
The full installation was completed during the 2024 summer holidays to minimise disruption to the school year.
The Outcome
The project resulted in a safe, inspiring and highly functional outdoor learning environment tailored specifically for EYFS learners. Staff observed a marked increase in outdoor engagement, with children benefiting from a range of new opportunities to play, explore, and learn outside the traditional classroom. The space’s durability and all-weather design ensure it will serve the school community for years to come, embodying the school’s values and commitment to holistic development.
What the Customer Said
“The transformation is incredible. It’s now a space we’re proud of and one the children absolutely love. Every zone has a purpose, and we’ve noticed the difference in how the children interact, learn, and play. We were so impressed with the quality of work, service and the staff.
