St Helen’s Catholic Primary, Plaistow

A key element of the school’s vision is to ensure that all equipment is high quality, accessible, fit for purpose and reflects actual life needs and the playground is no exception. They also encourage risk taking and develop problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.

A key element of the school’s vision is to ensure that all equipment is high quality, accessible, fit for purpose and reflects actual life needs and the playground is no exception. They also encourage risk taking and develop problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom.
The Challenge
Headteacher, Claire Doherty had two potential locations in mind but wasn’t sure if either space was even feasible due to their awkward, irregular size and shape. Her preferred area was currently unused and Claire was keen to maximise every inch of the sites outdoor resources. The learning goals for the project were problem solving and gross motor development for pupils between the ages of five and eleven.
The Solution
The irregular shape required a bespoke solution. Through our creative design service, we created a unique one of a kind climbing system that includes elements of our Tangled, Wildwood and Freeflow climbing ranged. These different styles offer children of a mixed age and ability level the freedom to think creatively, problem solve and take calculated risks when navigating different pathways around the equipment. To ensure the equipment is accessible all year round, an artificial grass safety surface was selected, preserving the natural feel of the area. Following all installations, standard or unique, a free of charge, independent post installation inspection is carried out to confirm the project is compliant and safe to use.
