Outdoor Transformation for SEN Pupils at Queen’s Park Primary School, London
Location: London
The Challenge
The school approached us with a need to improve an underutilised outdoor space dedicated to their SEN pupils. The area was primarily paved, with limited play value and no dedicated sensory or therapeutic features. Staff expressed the need for a more engaging, safe, and supportive environment that could benefit pupils with a variety of additional needs. It was crucial that the space offered opportunities for both movement and calm, structured play, while being safe, inclusive and manageable within a modest budget.
Our Solution
We proposed a complete transformation of the space, designed to support sensory integration, motor skills development, and inclusive play. Central to the design was the inclusion of different textures, zones, and interactive features to cater to a wide range of sensory preferences. The area was resurfaced with a mix of coloured wetpour and artificial grass, providing both safety and visual interest. A meandering sensory pathway added a new layer of interaction and structure, helping pupils move purposefully through the space.
To enhance active play and encourage movement, we installed a rocking deck, an ideal feature for vestibular input and balance development. For calming, hands-on exploration, a small magnetic water wall was introduced. This supports STEM-based learning while offering soothing water play that many SEN children respond positively to.
The space was also furnished with brightly coloured mushroom seats that act as playful resting spots and social gathering points. A timber play store with shelves allowed for organised resource storage, supporting routine and independence in how the space is used by both pupils and staff.
Before and After
Before the transformation, the space was dominated by hard surfaces, with minimal equipment and little sensory appeal. It lacked purpose and didn’t reflect the needs of the children using it. Following the redevelopment, the area became a vibrant, structured, and engaging environment tailored specifically for SEN pupils. Colourful surfacing, textured pathways, interactive features, and natural-looking elements now encourage pupils to explore, play, and learn in a setting that supports their physical and emotional needs.
The Result
The completed space has had a notable impact. Staff reported increased levels of engagement during outdoor sessions, with children showing more willingness to explore the area and participate in sensory activities. The mix of movement and calm zones allows pupils to regulate at their own pace, while the clear layout supports transitions and structure, both vital for many children with additional needs.
This project demonstrates that with the right design and understanding of a setting’s needs, even a compact space with a modest budget can become a powerful tool in supporting SEN education and wellbeing.
Client Feedback
“The difference this has made to our children is incredible. They now have a safe, exciting space where they can explore and engage with the outdoors in a way that meets their individual needs. The team were fantastic throughout — understanding exactly what we needed and delivering something better than we imagined. It’s made a real impact, and we’ve already seen improved confidence and interaction in the pupils using it every day.”
