Pathways School Playground Development

Pathways School sought to transform their outdoor space into an engaging, high-impact playground tailored specifically for students aged 11–16. The brief focused on creating a standout “WOW factor” feature that would challenge and excite older pupils, while also incorporating fitness equipment and a dedicated sports zone.

Overview

With a total budget of £80,000, the project aimed to deliver a durable, low-maintenance, and visually impressive environment that would encourage physical activity, social interaction, and skill development.

The Brief

The school required:

A large, visually striking focal play feature suitable for older students
Outdoor gym equipment to promote strength and fitness
A large climbing wall to provide physical challenge
Updated sports markings, including a running track
A solution that could be installed safely during term time with minimal disruption

Our Solution

1. Showstopping Centrepiece: Tangled Cobweb

At the heart of the development, we installed our unique Tangled Cobweb structure. Chosen for its impressive scale, height, and complexity, it provides a challenging climbing experience ideal for 11–16 year olds.

To ensure maximum safety and compliance, the unit was installed with green and black wetpour surfacing, meeting BS EN 1177 impact attenuation standards. This not only enhances safety but also adds a bold visual contrast that elevates the overall design.

2. Outdoor Gym Area

To encourage fitness and strength-building, we installed a range of timber outdoor gym equipment. This was specifically selected for its:

Low maintenance requirements compared to steel alternatives
Natural aesthetic that complements the school environment
Durability and suitability for frequent use

The gym equipment was paired with grass matting surfacing, providing a safe, slip-resistant, and visually subtle finish.

3. Bespoke Traversing Climbing Wall

A key feature of the project was the installation of a bespoke traversing climbing wall, designed with increased height to add an extra level of challenge for older students.

This element promotes:

Upper body strength
Coordination and balance
Confidence through progressive challenge

4. Sports Zone & Markings

To complete the space, we created a vibrant sports zone using thermoplastic markings, including a clearly defined running track.

These markings were chosen for their:

Bright, engaging appearance
Long-lasting durability
Low maintenance requirements

The result is a multi-use area that supports both structured PE lessons and informal play.

Installation

The entire project was completed within a two-week installation period, carried out safely during term time. Careful planning and site management ensured minimal disruption to the school’s daily operations while maintaining the highest safety standards.

The Result

The finished playground delivers a dynamic and inclusive environment that meets the needs of older students. The combination of challenging equipment, fitness facilities, and sports provision has transformed the outdoor space into a hub of activity and engagement.
