Nethergate Academy, Nottingham

Nethergate Academy, located in Nottingham, is a co-educational Academy offering high-quality education to children and young people aged 5 to 19 with special educational needs. It serves many students who have faced challenges integrating into mainstream educational environments.

To support the extension of a recently completed SEN unit which increased provision for children with Autism, ESP were invited to design and quote a new play area for primary aged children who exhibit a range of complex behavioural and learning needs.

The transformation is evident. A previously unusable space has been thoroughly revamped. Fourteen trees have been removed, and shrubbery has been replanted where feasible. Fences have been dismantled and re-erected to enlarge the playground space. The central tower unit now provides endless fun and play possibilities for the children. Additional new play features include swings and in-ground trampolines. Artificial grass now blankets the entire area, with the asphalt path remaining intact for pedestrian use.

The installation faced several challenges, primarily due to utilities and services being installed beyond the minimum recommended depths. Additionally, inclement weather caused further delays in completing the surfacing works. Throughout the project, consistent communication with the school was upheld, and any issues were quickly communicated and addressed.

At ESP, we understand the importance of maintaining strict schedules, especially in SEN settings where changes to daily routines can unsettle students. Nethergate Academy exemplifies the confidence that arises from navigating challenging circumstances. We anticipate further partnerships with Greenwood Academies Trust.
