The new outdoor SEN space at Djanogly Strelley Academy in Strelley, Nottingham looks amazing. A complete transformation!
Location: Strelley, Nottingham
Brief – ESP Play were invited to scope playground works during the final stages of a development for an SEN facility. The new setting is intended to support the learning and play opportunities for KS1 & 2 children with SEN needs. The objective was to design a fun and engaging play space to foster learning and PSED.
Although the school had drafted provisional plans, a detailed inspection of the site revealed the need for a reassessment. This was due to ground conditions being compromised during extensive building works. Furthermore, the school were seeking a quick turnaround with a desire to make the space operational for the start of summer term.
Outcome – The success of this project was all in the preparation. The 500m2 grassy area underwent complete excavation, including the removal of waste, and regrading with spoil from the site itself. A 100mm layer of MOT type stone was installed to enhance drainage and ensure level consolidation. These groundworks were topped with high grade 35mm pile artificial turf. The SEN play area, featuring swings, rotators, climbers, and spinners, meets the client’s specifications and compliments the space. The design of the SEN play zone is future-proof, allowing for adaptation to the evolving needs of the school.
Tim Jeffs the Director of Education for Djanogly Learning Trust is delighted with the finished results. Tim was impressed with ESP PLAY’s call to action with such tight deadlines. This project was presented to ESP PLAY and signed off (on completion) within 7 weeks, which is a real testament to all involved. More importantly, the pupils got to enjoy their new playground on return from the Easter holidays.
