Parent Survey
Britain’s playgrounds have become no-go areas for the nation’s children. In our recent study of British parents, ESP Play revealed that two out of five (44%) of parents cited poor equipment conditions as the main reason…
Founded in 2003, ESP began with a simple but powerful idea: to transform the traditional school playground into a meaningful space for learning, development, and wellbeing. What started as a small initiative has grown into one of the UK’s leading providers of playground equipment, with our reach now extending to international markets.
Built with Purpose
In the early 2000s, schools across the UK were facing a rising challenge: children were becoming increasingly sedentary, choosing screens over sport and outdoor play. This shift had serious implications—not only for physical health, but also for mental wellbeing, social interaction, confidence, and communication skills.
Our founding team at ESP recognised the long-term risks of this lifestyle trend and set out to find a solution. The answer? Rethink the playground.
A New Vision for Playgrounds
We envisioned a 21st-century playground that wasn’t just for the sporty or outgoing children—but one that included every child, especially those who might shy away from traditional PE lessons or competitive games.
Back then, playgrounds were often marked with aerosol paint—temporary, uninspiring, and quickly forgotten. ESP pioneered the use of thermoplastic playground markings: a durable, engaging, and educational upgrade. But we didn’t stop at durability—we designed markings that were purpose-built to support the PE curriculum, encourage inclusive play, and improve fundamental movement skills for all ages and abilities.
These innovative designs, supported by nationally accredited teacher training, helped teachers become more confident in delivering PE, and children more confident in participating. What looked like fun and games to pupils was actually a powerful tool for developing physical literacy—and independent research soon confirmed its positive impact.
Rapid Growth and a New Chapter
As demand surged and our reputation grew, schools began asking:
“Do you supply traditional playground equipment too?”
This question sparked the next chapter in our journey. We expanded our capabilities and proudly became a UK manufacturer of playground equipment, offering a huge range of innovative, inclusive, and exciting solutions for children from age 2 right through to adults.
Today: A Trusted Partner in Play
Today, ESP stands as a trusted name in the education, housing, leisure, and local authority sectors, delivering outdoor play and learning solutions across the UK and around the globe. Our commitment remains the same: to create play environments that inspire confidence, support development, and improve physical and mental wellbeing for every individual.
