Freeflow Modular Climber at Holy Rood Catholic Primary School, Hertfordshire

Overview

The school’s existing trim trail had deteriorated over time and was no longer fit for purpose. The project focused on removing the tired equipment and replacing it with a new modular climbing structure from our Freeflow range, together with new safety surfacing.

Working with a budget of £20,000, the aim was to create a safer, more attractive and engaging space where pupils could enjoy a variety of physical challenges.

The Brief

The school wanted to:

• Remove the old and damaged trim trail equipment
• Replace it with a more varied and engaging climbing structure
• Provide opportunities for climbing, balancing, traversing and coordination
• Upgrade the worn ground surface with new impact-absorbing rubber mulch
• Make better use of the available outdoor space
• Deliver the project within the school’s £20,000 budget

Our Solution

New Rubber Mulch Surfacing

The existing area had become worn and muddy through frequent use and was no longer providing an attractive or practical play environment.

New green rubber mulch safety surfacing was installed beneath the equipment, creating a cleaner and more durable finish. The natural green colour complements the surrounding grass and established trees while providing an impact-absorbing surface around the new climbing activities.

The upgraded surfacing has also improved the year-round usability and overall appearance of the area.

Freeflow Modular Climber

The old trim trail was removed and replaced with a new modular climber from ESP Play’s Freeflow range.

The interconnected structure incorporates a varied selection of physical challenges, including:

• Overhead ladder bars
• Rope bridges and traversing nets
• Climbing walls with hand and footholds
• Hanging and upper-body activities

Balance and coordination challenges

The Freeflow design allows pupils to choose different routes through the equipment, helping them progressively develop their strength, balance, coordination, confidence and problem-solving skills

Its modular layout provides significantly more play value within the available space and enables several pupils to use the equipment at the same time.

Installation

The complete playground transformation was delivered within 3 days.

Careful planning and efficient project management allowed the old equipment to be removed and the new climber and rubber mulch surfacing to be installed with minimal disruption to the school

The Result

The completed project has transformed a tired and deteriorating activity area into a fresh, challenging and engaging outdoor play space.

The new Freeflow modular climber provides pupils with a wide variety of physical activities, while the green rubber mulch creates a smart, durable and cohesive finish.

By combining multiple climbing and traversing challenges within one interconnected structure, the school has gained a much more versatile playground that encourages pupils to be active, build confidence and develop essential physical skills.

The project demonstrates how a £20,000 budget can be used effectively to completely renew an existing playground area and deliver lasting play value for the school.
