Low-Level Trim Trail and Rubber Mulch Surfacing at Bolton Primary School, Appleby-in-Westmorland

The school initially contacted ESP Play through LiveChat to ask whether we could help develop plans for a trim trail.

After discussing the school’s requirements, ESP Play arranged a site visit to assess the available space, take measurements and make sure the proposed equipment could be safely installed within the playground.

The school had found ESP Play through a Google search and, after exploring our website and products, decided that our range of outdoor play equipment was a good fit for what they wanted to achieve.

The challenge

Bolton Primary School had already obtained three quotations from other playground companies but wasn’t impressed with the designs or equipment that had been proposed.

The school therefore approached ESP Play to develop a more engaging trim trail that would better suit its pupils and available budget.

The school wanted the new trim trail to be suitable for children aged approximately 3–7 years, with a budget of £5,500.

They also wanted to maximise the amount of equipment they could include within the budget.

To help achieve this, the school initially decided to keep the trim trail equipment at a low level. This meant that the equipment would not require a dedicated impact-attenuating safety surface, allowing more of the budget to be invested in the equipment itself.

The school initially planned to install its own bark surfacing around the equipment once the trim trail had been installed.

The solution

A low-level trim trail designed for children aged 3–7.

ESP Play created a bespoke combination of low-level climbing, balancing and agility equipment designed to provide different physical challenges for younger children.

The completed trim trail includes:

• Balance Beam
• Wobbly Plank
• Low Level Traverse Net
• Rope Traverse Zig
• Log Pass
• Spinning Log

Each piece of equipment provides a different type of physical challenge.

The Balance Beam helps children develop balance and coordination, while the Wobbly Plank introduces an additional challenge by moving as children make their way across it.

The Low Level Traverse Net encourages children to scramble and climb, while the Rope Traverse Zig challenges them to move from one side to the other.

The Log Pass and Spinning Log provide further opportunities to develop strength, coordination and physical confidence.

Together, the equipment creates a varied trim trail that allows children to develop different physical skills while having fun.

Low-Level Trim Trail Equipment for Younger Children

The school wanted the equipment to be suitable for children aged 3–7, so the design focused on low-level challenges that younger pupils could approach with confidence.

Low-level trim trails can provide an excellent introduction to climbing and physical activity, allowing children to develop their skills before progressing to more challenging equipment.

The variety of activities also means children can practise different skills as they move around the trail.

They can balance across beams and planks, scramble across nets, traverse ropes and develop strength and coordination through the different log activities.

This provides a more engaging experience than a single piece of playground equipment and allows several children to use different parts of the trim trail at the same time.

Safety Considerations

Safety was an important consideration from the very beginning of the project.

ESP Play carried out a site visit before finalising the design, allowing the team to measure the available space and carefully plan the position of the equipment.

The school chose to keep the equipment at a low level so that a dedicated safety surface would not be required beneath the equipment.

This allowed the school to maximise its £5,500 budget and invest in a wider range of trim trail activities.

The equipment was planned around the available space to ensure appropriate clearances and safe access between the different activities.

Choosing Rubber Mulch Instead of Bark

Following completion of the trim trail installation, the school decided that it would prefer a permanent, all-year-round playground surface rather than installing bark.

ESP Play therefore installed green Rubber Mulch around the new climbing area.

Rubber Mulch is made from recycled rubber chippings and has a natural appearance similar to bark. However, unlike loose bark, the rubber chippings are bonded together so that they remain in place.

This makes Rubber Mulch a low-maintenance playground surfacing option that doesn’t require the regular sweeping and topping up associated with loose bark.

The green colour also complemented the surrounding outdoor environment and created a natural-looking finish around the trim trail.

The decision to install Rubber Mulch gave the school a more permanent playground surfacing solution that could be used throughout the year.

Installation

ESP Play first visited Bolton Primary School to assess the site and measure the available space.

The trim trail was then designed around the school’s requirements, age range and £5,500 budget.

The low-level equipment was installed to provide a range of climbing, balancing and coordination challenges for children aged 3–7.

Once the school decided to upgrade from its original plan for bark surfacing, ESP Play returned to install the green Rubber Mulch safety surface around the trim trail.

The finished area provides a permanent and low-maintenance surface that complements the new equipment.

The outcome

A fun and challenging trim trail for younger pupils.

The completed project has transformed the school’s outdoor play area into an exciting climbing and physical activity zone for children aged 3–7.

Children can now:

• Practise balancing
• Develop strength and coordination
• Scramble and climb
• Improve physical confidence
• Develop agility and spatial awareness
• Challenge themselves through different activities
• Play alongside their friends
• Develop physical skills through active outdoor play

The variety of low-level equipment means children can move between different activities and experience a range of physical challenges.

The later addition of Rubber Mulch also means the school now has a permanent, low-maintenance surface rather than relying on loose bark.
