Burnley-based playground manufacturer produces its laminated timber play equipment entirely in the UK, supplying local authorities, schools, councils, housebuilders and the leisure sector.

At a time when much of the outdoor play equipment installed in British parks and playgrounds arrives flat-packed from overseas, ESP Play is taking a different route. Every laminated timber structure the company supplies is designed, engineered and manufactured at its Lancashire facility, from raw timber through to the finished playground.

It is a point of pride for the business, and one it believes matters to its customers.

“From tree to playground, our products are made right here in the UK,” said Andrew Wood, CEO at ESP Play. “That means we control the quality at every stage, we can respond quickly when a customer needs something bespoke, and we’re supporting British jobs and British supply chains while we do it.”

Manufacturing with a Lighter Footprint

Making equipment in Britain carries a sustainability dividend as well as a commercial one. Sourcing certified timber and manufacturing domestically cuts the transport miles embedded in every play tower, trim trail and role-play unit the company ships, a metric increasingly scrutinised in public sector tenders and developer sustainability reporting.

For ESP Play, that is simply a by-product of how the business has always operated.

“Manufacturing in the UK isn’t a marketing line for us, it’s the way we’ve built the company,” Andrew Wood. “When a customer buys from ESP, they’re buying something made by our team, in our factory, to a standard we can stand behind.

Built for British Weather, and British Budgets

ESP Play manufactures using glulam laminated redwood timber, chosen for its strength, dimensional stability and resistance to splitting and weathering. Timber is sourced from FSC-certified sustainable forests and pressure treated to Use Class 4 with Tanalith E preservative once all manufacturing processes are complete, protecting against wood decay and insect attack for the long term.

Fixings are zinc-plated or stainless steel to resist corrosion, and steel-cored polypropylene ropes are specified for durability and vandal resistance in high-traffic public settings.

The result, the company says, is equipment that stands up to years of heavy use in exposed British conditions, a practical consideration for asset managers weighing whole-life cost rather than headline price.
