Established as part of the Fields in Trust “Six Acre Standard” and widely referenced within UK planning policy, a LAP sits at the entry-level of equipped play spaces — smaller in scale than a LEAP or NEAP, but no less important.

LAPs are designed to serve children of approximately four to six years old, providing safe, accessible play opportunities right on the doorstep of family homes. They are typically located within a very short walking distance of the homes they serve — usually within 60 metres or around one minute’s walk — so even the youngest children can enjoy them safely while remaining close to home.

A typical LAP includes:

• A small, defined play space, often around 100 square metres in size
• A minimum standard of equipped play features (typically informal or low-key)
• A surface appropriate for early years play
• Clear definition and boundaries between the play area and surrounding homes
• Signage identifying the play area
• An emphasis on safe, simple, age-appropriate play
