A Fantastic New EYFS Outdoor Provision at Sycamore Academy

ESP PLAY is delighted to showcase a wonderful new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor provision recently designed and completed for Sycamore Academy, part of the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust. This exciting new space transforms the school’s outdoor environment into a rich, stimulating learning setting where the youngest pupils can play, explore and develop every single day.

ESP PLAY — Your Specialist Partner in EYFS Outdoor Design

When it comes to creating truly effective Early Years outdoor environments, working with the right specialist makes all the difference. ESP PLAY is proud to be a trusted partner for schools across the UK, supporting Early Years leaders, headteachers and academy trusts to design and deliver outdoor provisions that genuinely enhance curriculum delivery and child development.

Our experienced team take time to understand each school’s vision, pupil needs, curriculum priorities and site characteristics. We then translate those insights into a bespoke, highly effective design that links every feature to a clear learning purpose. From initial concepts through to manufacture, installation and aftercare, we manage every stage in-house, giving schools complete confidence in the process and the finished result.

The outdoor environment plays a vital role in delivering the EYFS framework. It supports physical, social, emotional and cognitive development in ways the indoor classroom cannot replicate, encouraging children to move, explore, take healthy risks, communicate and create. A well-designed outdoor provision nurtures curiosity, independence, resilience and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime — and that is exactly what we set out to deliver at Sycamore Academy.

A Curriculum-Rich Design Packed with Learning Opportunities

At the heart of the new provision is a challenging play tower, carefully designed to develop both fine and gross motor skills through climbing, gripping, balancing and sliding. An exciting up-and-over bridge encourages adventurous role play and physical confidence, while a sunken trampoline brings inclusive, low-level bouncing fun that supports coordination, core strength and sensory development.

A magnetic water wall invites hands-on investigation of flow, cause and effect, problem-solving and early scientific thinking, supporting communication and collaboration in equal measure. A dedicated mud kitchen area and sand pit add wonderful opportunities for messy, sensory, imaginative play, perfect for developing creativity, language and social skills as children cook, dig, scoop and share.

Imaginative play continues with fun play tunnels for crawling, hiding and exploring, and a charming block-paved roadway where children can ride, push and role-play with wheeled toys, building spatial awareness and cooperative play.

Cosy reading areas provide inviting outdoor spaces where literacy and language can flourish, while performance stages encourage storytelling, music, movement and self-expression. Dedicated mark-making zones offer the perfect outdoor canvas for early writing, drawing and creative development.

Beautifully Finished, Built to Last

The area has been finished to the highest standard with a combination of high-quality safety surfacing and resin bound gravel, creating a safe, durable, accessible and visually striking environment that will support outdoor learning for many years to come.

ESP PLAY would like to thank Sycamore Academy and the L.E.A.D. Academy Trust for their trust in our team. We are proud to be your specialist partner in outdoor learning, and we wish the staff and children many happy years of playing, learning and discovering together in their fantastic new outdoor provision.
