Exciting New EYFS Outdoor Provision at Middleton Primary School, Leeds

ESP PLAY is delighted to showcase a fantastic new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor provision recently designed and completed for Middleton Primary School, part of Cockburn Multi Academy Trust. This vibrant new space transforms the school’s outdoor environment into a rich, engaging learning setting where the youngest pupils can play, explore, discover and grow every single day.

The Importance of Outdoor Provision in the Early Years

A high-quality outdoor provision is absolutely essential to the delivery of the Early Years curriculum. The EYFS framework places outdoor learning on an equal footing with the indoor classroom, recognising that the outdoors offers unique opportunities for children to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively in ways the indoor environment simply cannot match.

Outside, children move more freely, engage their senses, take healthy risks and explore the world around them with curiosity and confidence. From building gross motor skills and coordination to developing language, communication, problem-solving and creativity, outdoor provision supports every area of early learning. It nurtures independence, resilience and a genuine love of learning that lays the foundations for a child’s whole educational journey.

A Carefully Considered, Curriculum-Rich Design

ESP PLAY worked closely with Middleton Primary School to design an outdoor provision that supports every strand of the EYFS framework. At the heart of the scheme is a dedicated play tower for physical development, providing fantastic opportunities for climbing, sliding and balancing, helping young children build strength, coordination and confidence.

A beautifully designed natural water feature and a magnetic water wall bring water play to life, inviting children to investigate flow, cause and effect, and early scientific thinking through hands-on, sensory exploration. Water play is a firm favourite in any EYFS setting, supporting communication, collaboration and creativity in equal measure.

Imaginative play has been brought to the fore with the addition of fun play tunnels, perfect for crawling, hiding and exploring, and a charming block-paved roadway that invites children to ride, push and role-play with wheeled toys, supporting gross motor skills, spatial awareness and cooperative play.

Cosy reading areas provide inviting spaces where literacy and language can flourish outdoors, while performance stages encourage storytelling, role play, music and movement, helping children build confidence and self-expression. Dedicated mark-making zones offer the perfect outdoor canvas for early writing, drawing and creative development.

All-Weather, All-Year Outdoor Learning

To ensure the outdoor provision can be used in all weathers, ESP PLAY installed a smart lean-to canopy, providing a sheltered space that protects pupils and resources from sun and rain alike. This allows outdoor learning to continue year-round, no matter the British weather.

The area has been finished to the highest standard with a combination of high-quality safety surfacing and resin bound gravel, creating a safe, durable, accessible and visually appealing environment that will look fantastic for years to come.

ESP PLAY would like to thank Middleton Primary School and Cockburn Multi Academy Trust for their trust in our team, and we wish the staff and children many happy years of learning, playing and discovering together in their wonderful new outdoor provision.
