Inspiring New EYFS Outdoor Provision at Lapage Primary School, Bradford

ESP PLAY is delighted to showcase a wonderful new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) outdoor provision recently designed and completed for Lapage Primary School in Bradford. This vibrant new space transforms the school’s outdoor area into a rich, engaging learning environment where the youngest pupils can play, explore, discover and grow every single day.

Why Outdoor Provision Matters in the Early Years

A high-quality outdoor provision is absolutely essential to the delivery of the Early Years curriculum. The EYFS framework recognises outdoor learning as an equal partner to the indoor classroom, providing unique opportunities for children to develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Outdoors, children move more freely, take healthy risks, engage their senses and explore the world around them in ways that simply aren’t possible inside.

From building gross motor skills and coordination, to developing language, communication, problem-solving and creativity, the outdoor environment supports every area of learning and development. It encourages curiosity, independence and confidence, laying the foundations for a lifelong love of learning.

A Carefully Designed, Curriculum-Rich Space

ESP PLAY worked closely with Lapage Primary School to design an outdoor provision that supports every strand of the EYFS framework. At the heart of the scheme are timber play towers, providing fantastic opportunities for physical development through climbing, sliding and balancing, helping young children build strength, coordination and confidence.

A beautifully designed natural water feature and a magnetic water wall bring water play to life, inviting children to investigate flow, cause and effect, problem-solving and early scientific thinking through hands-on, sensory exploration. Water play is a firm favourite in any EYFS setting, supporting communication, collaboration and creativity in equal measure.

A dedicated garden area gives children the chance to nurture plants, observe seasonal change and connect with the natural world, while quiet reading areas offer cosy, inviting spaces where literacy and language can flourish outdoors. Performance stages encourage storytelling, role play, music and movement, helping to build confidence and self-expression, and dedicated mark-making zones provide a perfect outdoor canvas for early writing, drawing and creative development.

To complete the area, ESP PLAY installed high-quality safety surfacing throughout, ensuring a safe, accessible and welcoming environment in which children can play freely all year round.

ESP PLAY would like to thank Lapage Primary School for their trust in our team, and we wish the staff and children many happy years of learning, playing and discovering together in their fantastic new outdoor provision.
