The Head Teacher Melissa contacted ESP PLAY as they had an overgrown nature area that needed converting for forest school activities. Due to the time of year and commitments at the school a meeting was booked for the New Year where our consultant was able to view the space. Melissa wasn’t joking when she advised it was overgrown, but we were confident we could transform the space.

Location: Reading, West Berkshire

The timescales of the project were delayed on a number of occasions. However, the school were keen to get the area cleared and add a forest school area. They were finally able to go ahead at the beginning of 2024.

The overgrown space was cleared, creating a natural blank space for us to add the forest school. A rubber mulch path runs through the area with our weaving posts and house frame at the entrance for those den building and role play activities. Our 3 tier amphitheatre sits central with a block paved pad for the fire pit for learning to light fires and cook. The stepping stones add an obstacle course type activity. The woodland hut and playhut with table and seats add learning spaces for the children.

Leaving plants and trees in the space will provide a natural habitat for insects and allow children to learn the different leaf, plant and tree types.

The school said the whole team were great and really personable, they checked in all the way through the process from initial call to completion. The children adore the space and are enjoying using it.
